Fred was a true gentleman. By this I mean not only that he had the manners and courtesy that usually goes with that description, he did. But, in my experience, he was also a gentle man. A loving and proud husband and father with a quiet but definite twinkle in his eye! He was, of course, a member of several families and friendship groups and each will have different memories of him that together go some way to making up the whole. By marrying Mary, my cousin, he became a member of ‘The Carter Clan’. They married abroad and I sometimes wonder whether he really knew what he’d let himself in for! Back in Blighty he allowed himself to become one of us – joining in our family parties, welcoming visitors at the door, offering wise counsel when invited. Thank you, Fred. Helen Carter-Shaw
